The day after September 11th, 2001, a colleague called me and proposed a memorial concert that was to happen in less than a week.  He asked me to write a piece in memory of the victims of that day, and on September 13th, 2001, I wrote Evanescence.  I chose to take a slightly different angle, and wrote a distorted and solitary music to Yamanoue no Okura’s inward and pensive text.
